“Get excited to learn about how the world works. Dive into building science, material science, and global supply chain” is the advice that HCM’s Ilijana Soldan, Senior Sustainability Manager, provided to listeners looking to adopt a more holistic approach to sustainability.
Ilijana joined a number of other innovators in the sustainable design space on the I Hear Design: the i+s podcast, which spotlights interior design and architecture news, interviews, and opinions. The conversation delved into a pertinent topic in today’s design world: the present and future of holistic sustainability and design.

When prompted with the idea of a holistic approach, as well as designing for resilience and sustainability, Ilijana underlined the importance of examining building systems and how they interact with one another in an attempt to decrease the carbon footprint of any given project. Furthermore, on the topic of resilience, Ilijana emphasized the importance of passive survivability and the various benefits that incorporating the concept can have, not only in a crisis perspective, but also in day-to-day life.
She also addressed circular design principles along with advancements in sustainability. She urged listeners as well as other participants on the podcast to think about how existing buildings and structures can be reused to reduce the carbon footprint of the project along with adding distinct character elements to a space. On that front, Ilijana emphasized that a successful sustainable design process starts with the right mindset – one that embraces creativity, optimism, and innovation in the face of the global challenges posed by climate change.
