MyMichigan Medical Center Midland, Cardiovascular Center and Cancer Center Landscape Architecture

In close collaboration with the architectural team, HCM’s landscape architects crafted a dynamic and restorative environment for this 180,000-square-foot, three-story infill renovation project. The new cardiovascular center features a multilevel terrace that enhances the arrival experience and creates an inviting entrance sequence. Outdoor café seating offers staff and visitors a comfortable place to pause and recharge.

Inside, the lobby welcomes visitors with a striking winter garden that fills the three-story atrium with year-round greenery, establishing a strong connection between nature and the built environment.

The adjacent Cancer Center features a serene, enclosed interior courtyard—an extension of the main lobby designed to support both reflection and engagement. Multi-level seating areas and a central art installation provide a versatile space that accommodates both quiet respite and planned hospital events.

Views into the courtyard are available not only through the lobby’s expansive glazing but also from the third-floor infusion suites, offering patients visual access to nature and daily activity throughout their treatment. Color-changing LED lighting animates the courtyard, marking seasonal changes, special occasions, and health awareness campaigns.

Clear wayfinding is supported by building entrances on all sides and a restrained, cohesive planting palette that reinforces the center’s calm and welcoming identity.
