The University of Maryland selected HCM to address critical space needs at the UMD School of Nursing (SoN). The school was in need of expanded simulation space, student collaboration space, academic offices and meeting space to support the increase in student enrollment and future growth. HCM began this effort by developing a feasibility study to establish scope, program, and establish the overall cost of the project. Once the report was finalized and the project was funded, HCM was asked to design the renovation of the building.
The renovation addressed the changing pedagogy of nursing education and integrated new space types, such as the Augmented/Virtual Reality Lab. A Simulation Hospital Suite was developed to create a realistic environment for the students to participate in hospital based simulations. This included eight Patient Rooms, a Medication Management Room, a Nurses Desk, Student Collaboration Spaces, and a Central Control Room. A new 10-station skills lab was incorporated with with high fidelity manikins and a two-person Control Room.
